Hybrid DVR market share is growing

Hybrid DVR’s the
way to go at this time.

Which Dahua DVR is right for you now?

At this moment in the evolution of Video Security Systems,it is my opinion that the hybrid DVR represents a very attractive solution.

What of the supposed demise of Analog and DVR’s?

We endured the debates. TESC hybrid dvr durban south africa

IP will overtake analog, Network Video recorders will replace the DVR, etc.

I was never quite sold on the advantages of IP, and still can’t identify the specific differences
between a NVR and a modern DVR.

While everybody was guessing at the outcome, the DVR manufacturers were not resting on their laurels. They continued to develop their offerings, and enter the Hybrid DVR.

Why are hybrids attractive?

Forklift upgrades are not appealing

In most cases you need to choose one or the other. Analog vs IP vs HDcctv.

This is a difficult call for those who already have invested substantially in an Analog System, as it requires a complete hardware and media upgrade – what we call the forklift upgrade.

Of course many want to utilize the increased resolution available from Megapixel cameras, but the cost and complexity, of a forklift upgrade is the limiting factor here.

No one will take kindly to writing off the significant investment, already made in the Analog system – and compounding that, with the investment required of a completely new system.

What about the added complexities of LAN, the new skillsets required, etc?

The Hybrid DVR offers the middle ground.

Hybrid DVR’s allow us to retain whatever component of the analog system is still relevant.

Hybrid DVR’s allow us to selectively add Megapixel where high resolution is required, -alongside the existing analog system.

Hybrid DVR’s present the opportunity to upgrade to Megapixel, retaining the major portion of our current investment in analog. We just need to upgrade the DVR and a few cameras – rather than replacing the entire system.

Hybrid DVR’s preserve traditional surveillance skill sets.

Traditional Video Surveillance integrators offer tons of experience – which goes beyond the hardware.

These professionals understand, lens selection, cable infrastructure, troubleshooting, surveillance levels and objectives, and many other nuances that combine to create effective surveillance.

A complete paradigm shift will require that either your CCTV integrator or your ITC personnel will need to be reskilled. The end result in any reskilling exercise is a freshman, in the relevant skillset, rather than a seasoned professional.

Hybrid DVR’s represent the perfect transitional tool.

Hybrid DVR’s not only allow the end user sufficient space to move, gradually towards new technologies, but they also create space for the CCTV integrators to evolve along with the technology.

Hybrid DVR’s preserve the traditional surveillance methods and retain seasoned surveillance professional’s skills.

The hybrid DVR spares the end user, a huge learning curve,as they adopt new technology packed in familiar ways.

You might wonder aloud – won’t they all ultimately have to make the change, endure the learning curve?

I don’t believe so – I imagine that the DVR of the future will look just like the DVR of today – except it will be displaying, encoding and recording Megapixel Video. In time Analog won’t be offered and the DVR will be solely Megapixel.

One question that we will have to wait to have answered is whether it will be IP Megapixel or HDcctv Megapixel.

Thankfully, Hybrid DVR’s mean we don’t have to make that call right now.

Will DVR’s accommodate Megapixel in the future?

Megapixel -720p and 1080p is currently the fastest growing segment in the Video Security System (VSS) market, so we do need to give this some consideration.

While IP is the predominant medium for Megapixel, HDcctv is emerging as a possible alternative – and one that will preserve the traditional VSS concepts even further.

HDcctv offers some appealing benefits over IP – but it’s still too early to gauge how it will evolve.

We currently have the Hybrid Analog/IP DVR and we have the n + m Hybrids which offer analog and HDcctv connectors. Depending on how HDcctv evolves we may even see n+m+I Hybrids.

It is my view that a clear direction will evolve before then, but in short – yes Hybrids already accommodate Megapixel Surveillance.

Having taken the time to write this article , it would be remiss of me, not to draw your attention to the Dahua Hybrid DVR and Megapixel IP options.
