CCTV Marches ON from 420TVL and WDR

The advances in CCTV cameras are coming in fast!

Just a few days ago, I was reading a comment that Analog CCTV has reached it’s limit at 540TVL.

Some new names cropping up are hawkeye 2170 DSP, and CP DSP and we are seeing CCTV cameras pushing beyond the 540TVL
mark.

From WDR to D-WDR

While cctv experimented with the purely linear, multiple scanning technologies of WDR, the hearing aid industry had already developed Digital WDR in the audio arena. Pure linear dynamic range techniques faced many challenges in the hearing aid
industry. The hearing impaired have benefited vastly from the application of digital sampling and correction in that industry.

Now CCTV is going there too —- check our website for the latest DWDR high definition cameras (I’ve only put up the box cameras thus far, but next week you’ll see our IR’s).

The WDR technology borrowed from the photography industry, and which was basically just an overlay of multiple pictures scanned with different contrasts, definitely improved the dynamic range of images. But that linear process was too simplistic, and didn’t do much for night time clarity.

Digital WDR techniques improve the contrast between high and low light areas, but more importantly – digitally balance the
areas between the different contrasts. DWDR creates higher color, and clarity images , especially in low light conditions.

3D DNR

These cameras are now employing embedded 3D digital noise reduction techniques, to even further improve image clarity,
and once again in low light conditions.

Wow – we are starting to see OSD systems with zoom capacity, on-board motion detection, etc. I am seeing cameras handling 120dB dynamic ranges, and watch out for the HIGH Digital Dynamic Range cameras — full motion picture color – you’ve seen those almost 3d like documentaries – well it’s finding it’s way into cctv cameras.

We really are spoilt for choice – HD TV, and all these improvements in closed circuit tv.

I am going to be doing some case studies here – in subsequent articles, as I am really impressed with what our partners are doing – watch this space to see what camtrac has got up to with gated residential premises.
